Depression can develop when hopelessness has been experienced again and again. Brené Brown describes hopelessness as arising from a combination of negative life events and negative thought patterns, especially self-blame and the belief that we are unable to change our circumstances. Over time, a person may begin to believe that their efforts will not matter, that their goals are out of reach, or that things will not get better.
When hopelessness becomes persistent, it can turn into despair. A person may stop trying not because they do not care, but because trying — and being disappointed again — has become too painful. Depression can feel like a state of resignation, where hope feels dangerous and change feels impossible.
Therapy can help create space for hope to return slowly and safely. Together, we work to understand the experiences, patterns, and beliefs that have contributed to depression, while helping you reconnect with a sense of possibility, agency, and care for yourself.
Definitions of hopelessness and despair adapted from Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart.
